I started a new discussion group for runners on LI. I am hoping that it will help improve communications within the running community. It will be a great way for runners to meet other runners, form group runs, find out about races and group runs, talk about injuries and anything you can think of pertaining to running. Race directors will be able to inform runners about races, last minute changes, directions to races, weather related issues. http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/eerunner/

GREAT RUNNING EVENT TO SAVE ANIMALS!!!!

Are you interested in running a marathon (or half- marathon) to raise money for shelter pets???

I am organizing a running team to support The Animal Rescue Fund of The Hamptons (ARF) in this year’s Hampton’s Marathon and Half Marathon (September 29th – East Hampton). For me, running a marathon is a greatly rewarding experience by itself, but running as part of a team for a charitable cause is even more rewarding. My intentions/plans so far are as follows:

·        To schedule two or three long distance practice runs prior to race day

·        To schedule at least two team fund raising events (maybe get a local bar and do a happy hour, all ideas welcome)

·        Individual teammates can fund raise via Email (this has proved most effective in the past), mail or other means (to be decided by your preference). I will provide a sample letter that you can use to send out or use as a guide to write your own letter and I will provide pre-addressed, to the shelter, envelopes.

·        There will be NO minimum fundraising requirement imposed on individuals but we can establish a goal as a team.

·        Wear team shirts on race day!!!

Basically, this team will not be extremely structured/formal, so I plan to work with people’s schedules, and other demands. The idea is to have fun, be part of a team and help animals!  If you are interested please respond to this post or shoot me an email at MCLAUGHLIN_VALERIE@HOTMAIL.COM

As for me, I have run three marathons and I am getting ready to run the Long Island Marathon in just a few weeks and NY in the fall with the Achilles Track Team. I think the Hamptons Marathon will be a scenic, flat run in great weather conditions.

For further information, see the marathon website as well as the Animal Shelter website:

The inaugural Hamptons Marathon and Half-Marathon will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2007. The course runs through Amagansett, Springs and East Hampton with views of the Atlantic Ocean and Nepague Bay out to the Long Island Sound.

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons is the leading animal welfare organization on the East End of Long Island.  Since 1974, ARF has rescued over 13,500 cats and dogs and found loving homes for them.  During their stay at the Adoption Center, the animals get nutritious food, exercise, a warm place to sleep every night, and excellent veterinary care. By working with sister organizations, for-profit companies and local government and through education and community outreach, ARF is able to save the lives of cats and dogs and enhance the lives of the people on the East End. Thank you to all ARF supporters and volunteers who make our work possible.
